See production notesAspiring, yet struggling scientist and inventor Flint Lockwood lives with his widowed fisherman father Tim in Swallow Falls, an island in the Atlantic Ocean where its economy is entirely based on sardines sales, which have plummeted due to the rest of the world deeming sardines unsavory, forcing the islanders to consume them all themselves. Flint plans to expand the town's diet by inventing the "Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator" (FLDSMDFR), a device that converts water into food via "genetic mutation". When Flint tries to connect the FLDSMDFR to a local substation, the machine overloads, rocketing across town and into the sky. In the process, it accidentally destroys Sardine Land, a new amusement park meant to revitalize the island's economy, aggravating the islanders. After evading arrest from police officer Earl Devereaux, a dejected Flint heads to the harbor where he meets Samantha "Sam" Sparks, a meteorologist intern from New York City whose big break was thwarted by the accident. As she and Flint interact, cheeseburgers begin raining from the sky; Flint realizes that the FLDSMDFR is now functioning in the stratosphere, using the condensation from clouds to create food-based weather systems. Swallow Falls is rechristened as Chewandswallow and becomes a food tourism destination, making Flint popular; he and Sam simultaneously fall in love. Tim draws Flint's attention to the fact that the food has begun to "over-mutate", becoming larger and less molecularly stable. Flint warns the island's now-morbidly obese mayor that the machine is malfunctioning, but he remains unconcerned. As a spaghetti-made tornado wreaks havoc in the town, Flint attempts to deactivate the machine, but the mayor inadvertently destroys the communication device in an attempt to stop him, causing the FLDSMDFR to become rogue and create a massive food storms across the globe. After some encouragement from Tim, Flint places a kill code in a USB drive and redesigns his flying car to reach and shut down the FLDSMDFR. Accompanied by his monkey Steve, Sam, her camera operator Manny and "Baby" Brent, they approach the stratosphere and discover that the FLDSMDFR has surrounded itself with a giant meatball-like chasm for protection and is now producing vicious sentient food. As they reach the interior, the drive is lost, prompting Flint to instruct Tim to send the kill code to his phone as Earl and the islanders evacuate on food-made boats. As Flint, Brent and Sam made their way further toward the FLDSMDFR's location, an accidental contact with peanut brittles triggers Sam's anaphylactic shock, forcing her to retreat with Brent while Flint continues forward alone. Finding the FLDSMDFR, which now developed a mind of its own, Flint attempts to use the kill code against it, only to discover that Tim sent the wrong file. As a last resort, Flint uses his "Spray-on Shoes" formula to jam the machine and destroy it, ending the food storm. The islanders praise Flint as a hero, Earl and Brent shows newfound respect to him, Tim shows appreciation for his son and he and Sam profess their love for each other. Meanwhile, the mayor becomes lost at sea after eating his own boat.

Sam: What is going on with your feet? Flint: Spray-On Shoes. They, uh, don't come off. Sam: Cool! [drags Flint's foot to see it] This could solve the Untied Shoes epidemic! What are they made of, some kind of elastic biopolymer adhesive? Flint: [as he looks at Sam, in love] Yeah. Exactly. Sam: I mean... [giggles nervously] Wow, they're shiny. I'm Sam. [lets go of Flint's foot] Flint: [hits his head] Flint. Steve: Steve! Sam: Is that a Monkey Thought Translator? Steve: Steve. Sam: Incredible! Did you make all of this stuff? [gasps in realized shock of anger] You hit me with a rocket! Flint: You kicked me in the face! Sam: I said I was sorry! [as she continues talking some yellow goop splats on the ladder and a pickle slice lands in the water] Oh! Do you know how hard it is to break into the weather game? Sam: This food weather was created intentionally by meek-ish backyard tinkerer, Flint Lockwood. Townspeople: [surprised] Huh? Earl: [shocked] Flint Lockwood?! Flint: [nervously] Hi. Earl: [angrily tackles him to the ground] You're under arrest for ruinin' Sardine Land! Sam: Flint, those burgers were awesome! The producer called and he was all like, [mimicking the producer in an enthusiastic deep voice] "Everybody loves that food weather." Mayor Shelbourne: Food weather. This could be even bigger than Sardine Land. Sam: Can you make it rain food again, please? Flint: Uh, I don't really know if I… Cal: You're gonna do it again? Earl: Oh, you gotta be kidding!

Flint: So here's how it works: Water goes in the top, and food comes out the bottom. Sam: So when you shot it up into the stratosphere, you figured it would induce a molecular phase change of the vapor from the cumulonimbus layer. Flint: That's actually a really smart observation. Sam: I mean… The clouds probably have water in them, which, uh, I guess is why you shot it up there in the first place. Flint: Right, right. That's why I did it that. On-On purpose. Sam: Right. Yeah. Flint: [in unison] Right. Sam: [in unison] Of course. Flint: The machine uses a principle hydro-genetic mutation. Water molecules are bombarded with microwave radiation which mutates their genetic recipe into any kind of food you want. Sam: So… pizza? Flint: Yes! Sam: Mashed potatoes? Flint: Yes. Sam: Peas?
